Just in case anyone out here was worried about having various medical procedures, where they sedate you, like an upper endoscopy. I had one on Friday, and everything went fine. Much to my relief they where able to find a vein suitable for an IV. I explained to everyone the nurses, and the anesthesiologist what suboxone was and why I was taking it. They kept wanting to whisper about it. Until I told them I didn't care if other people in the surgical center heard I was a drug addict. I would of thought that the anesthesiologist would of know about it already, if he did he didn't let on. Much to my surprise they gave me IV general anesthesia using propofol. I was expecting conscious sedation. Last thing I remember they said hurry and bit onto this tube. Then I woke in the recovery room, and a nurses aid was asking me how I felt. I felt just fine. The doctor came in, and was telling me all the good news That all I had was a hiatal hernia, no ulcers or erosions, (this is totally separate from the gallstone problem) and to make an appointment in two weeks to see him. Since I was still a little groggy I asked him to go talk to my wife instead. In ten minutes I was out of there and felt just fine. Would not have wanted to drive or anything, but other that felt fine. Whole day went great. Because I have a coming minor surgery I was a little worried, about finding a vein for an IV, and waking up during surgery. It seams everything will be OK. I mostly wanted to write this, so there would be positive examples of people going through anesthesia and medical procedures, while on suboxone, and everything working out just fine. Because of the novelty, I would even venture to say it was fun.

Hi Dr.Smith, Thanks for sharing, that will definitely ease some people's minds as they prepare for medical procedures.
Glad you're ok! Nancy |

Hey Dr Smith,
Glad everything went well for you. I wrote that word 'Propofol' down and plan on asking my doctor about it for my upcoming surgery. Thanks for the info.

Propofol is the white milky stuff they inject in the plastic surgery patients on the surgery show's Like "Dr. 90210" and "Surgery Before and After", because it looks like milk some medical staff call it "Milk of Amnesia". I actually don't know that much about it. I just mention it because that is what they used for me. It probably is not for everyone or every situation. For example my procedure was only minutes long. I don't know about longer procedures. I will find out soon thought. I just wanted people to know that, your addiction and Suboxone are not necessarily an obstacle to medical treatment.

| Hi Dr. Smith...I just got home from a "recovery" center in CA where they detoxed me from opiates I was on for chronic intractable pain and bridged me to suboxone. Of course I am on many other drugs to help the situation and I have no pain! It is miracilous! I am so glad to hear you had a good outcome with your situation and I appreciate the information on that particular topic as I am in need of some minor surgical work. Thank you Thank you!! |
